On 15th February at 9:20am, a spectacular fireball was witnessed by thousands of locals in the skies above Chelyabinsk, Russia. People stood, eyes locked skyward, observing the amazing sight of the bolide in the sky above. The size of the meteoroid pre- atmospheric entry was initially estimated by the Russian Academy of Sciences at 7,500 tonnes, a figure which was later revised by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to 11,000 tonnes. This indicates a size of 17-20 metres wide, which makes the Chelyabinsk meteorite – the largest object to have entered our atmosphere since the Tunguska event in 1908.
