What is Space Food?
As space missions began to last longer than just a quick trip out of the atmosphere it meant that food was needed which was lightweight and could last a long time. From the early Mercury and Apollo missions NASA worked on freeze drying their food. Freeze-drying is like suspended animation, it keeps the ice cream and other foods totally intact, but removes up to 98% of the water. As you eat the food, your mouth re-hydrates it, restoring it to its original state. Freeze drying allows the food to last for years without losing its flavour and it’s much lighter.
